2 large bound brown leather ledgers, measuring 16" x 12" x 3" thick. The first ledger starts with the opening of the Alturas Loidge in La port on Dec 8 1858. Here the lodge began its start with officers filled by appointment from the table rock lodge no 49. La Porte charter members were Drake, BW Barnes, AH Crew, Cornelius Lowres, Chas Learch, Samuel Love. The lodge met nearly weekly at first. Vol 1 consists of 480 pages recording the minutes of every meeting through Jan 16, 1864. The period 1864-1887 is missing, which probably was contained within 2 other volumes of a similar nature. The 2nd vol here is May 14 1887 through Dec 31 1921 comprised of 621 pages. There was room in the back for more but it appears the lodge may have come to its end in 1921. Jann Garvis used these volumes liberally in finding information about who was in la Porte during these years and published it in her book, Roar of the Monitors; Quest for Gold in the Northern Sierra, an extensive treated on the mines, people, and mining camps of Sierra county and parts of neighboring Plumas and butte counties.These volumes are important because they are from one of the most important gold mining regions in California and show records of fraternity among the mining community during the gold rush.La Porte was the key site for mining the rich Tertiary gravel unit known as the "blue lead" it was exceptionally rich and mining of the unit lasted in excel of 2 decades.Date: Country (if not USA): State: CaliforniaCity: La PorteProvenance:
