VIRGINIA FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF JOHN WOODSON (1786 - AFT. 1840), large format pencil and charcoal on paper, a fine example depicting in profile a distinguished gentleman with high collar, executed in the manner of Silon Amos Henkel of New Market, VA. Old typed label verso reads "Charcoal Portrait of / John Woodson / son of Col. Woodson / Member of Continental Congress / Copied from the original backing of frame / Therefore, this is either the 3 or 4 great grandfather of Parke Douglas Pendleton". Housed under glass in a modern frame and matte. Circa 1825. 19" x 14 1/2" sight, 32" x 25" OA.
Catalogue Note: John Miller Woodson was born at Raines Tavern in Cumberland Co., VA in 1786. His father, Col. John "Poplar Foot" Woodson Jr (1734/1747-1810), was a Revolutionary War veteran recognized as an early and important supporter of the patriot cause who served in the Virginia legislature after the war and was involved in correspondence with the Continental Congress. John Miller Woodson was a prosperous planter in Cumberland Co., VA before moving to Howard Co., MO where he died.
