AFTER EUSTACHE HERISSON (FRENCH, 1759-1818) FOLDING MAP OF OCEANIA, hand-colored engraving on paper mounted on linen, titled "Carte / DE L'OCEANIE / Comprenant / L'AUSTRALIE, LA POLYNESIE / ET DU GRAND ARCHIPEL D'ASIE / Dressee Par HERISSON, Geographe / a Paris / Chez JEAN, Rue St. Jean-de-Beauvias, No. 10. / 1832." in upper right corner, featuring North American and part of South America along the right side, Asia along the upper left side including China, the lower left with Australia labeled has "NOUVELLE HOLLANDE" and New Zealand as "NOUVELLE ZEELANDE", and the Pacific Ocean, or "GRAND OCEAN", with many islands, upper left corner with inset of "PLAN / DE LA / RIVIERE DES CIGNES, / Nouvelle Colonie Auglaise / Situee sur la Cote Occidentale / de la Nouvelle Hollande / reconue par le Capne. / James Stirling / 1827", back of linen with ink-inscribed "Oceanie / [Stille Meer?] / New Holland" twice. Housed under glass in a modern birdseye maple veneer frame, backed by a mat with two cutouts to reveal writing on back of linen. Circa 1832. 29 3/4" x 23" sight, 32" x 25 3/8" OA.
Condition
Paper in excellent visual condition with some light toning, minor wear along edges; linen with some tears along fold lines; frame with minor wear, slight separation at corners. Not examined out of frame.Â
