An antique Japanese Meiji Era enamel over brass kogo or box for incense. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The lid of the ware is enameled with polychrome images of bats, and a half moon surrounded by a cloud motif made in the Cloisonne technique. The exterior of the ware is enameled with polychrome floral and foliage patterns made in the same technique. Unmarked. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office. They also make great collectors items, and gifts.
