Description
The New York Herald. New York, Monday, March 24, 1862. THE BOMBARDMENT OF ISLAND NO. 10. With a large woodcut map of the Mississippi River at the borders of KY, TN, and MI, at the battle scene. Much news of the War on the front page and pp 4-5. Many adverts and other news, including a warning to Great Britain. 8 pp. Disbound, Split in outer fold about 3/4 of the way up. Inside fold OK. H 22" x W 15-1/4". Comes in a large mylar sleeve. Condition: VG Copy of Report of the Attorney of the United States for the District Court of United States for Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Report for August Term 1864. 8 pp large format table of cases before the Court, usually Prizes of War. H 17" x W 22". Chips and tears at edges, some splits at folds. Signed at end: Respectfully submitted by Charles Gilpin U.S. Atty." Condition: Good. Surgeon's Report of the examination of an applicant for Enlistment in the Invalid Corps.. July 30th, 1863. For Christopher Ryan who was a Private in the 4th Reg. NJ Vols. He was incapable of serving active field duty due to Rheumatism and Varicose Veins of left leg. Signed by richard R. Rogers (surgeon). Docketed on back. H 10' x W 8". Condition: Excellent. Headquarters, Pennsylvania Militia, Hospital Department, Harrisburg, PA. Jany 18th 1864. Cover letter for Commission as Asst. Surg. of the 19th Regt. Cavalry for A.G. Reed, M.D. Signed by James King, Surgeon General, Pennsylvania. H 9-5/8" x W 7-1/2". Probably trimmed at top as some writing has been cut off on the verso. Civil War related: A l4 pp. letter from a Mr. Millard from Red Bridge to his "Friend Martin". A "catch-up" letter from one school chum to another, both just setting out in life after school. The letter is dated Dec. 8th, 1860, but there is no mention of the War. The main interest here is his statement that "on Tuesday Nov. 6th, 1860, I cast my first vote for Abe Lincoln, and, I trust you did the same...". H 12-1/2" x W 8". Folds, but overall in fine shape. Certificate: Children of the Confederacy. Certifies that Elizabeth Loving Elser, the Great Grand daughter of Mary Davis Loving, who...converted her home into a hospital for refugees...is duly elected member of...Texas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy...this 31st day of March 1931. H 10-1/2" x W 12". Some small chips and edge tears, age darkening and light stains. Overall VG.
