Description
A large steel engraved portrait of Kentucky politician Henry Clay seated outdoors near Ashland, his home in Lexington, visible in the distance to Clay's left and also depicted in the vignette in the lower margin. Clay sits beneath a tree and is accompanied by his dog. The print was first published in 1843 as Clay was preparing for his 1844 presidential campaign and is after a c.1840 painting by John Wood Dodge (Nashville/Chicago/New York, 1807-1893) now in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Engraved by H.S. Sadd and published by John Neale, 1843. Housed in a wooden frame with giltwood fillet. Plate: 19 1/2" H x 15" W. Sight: 24 3/8" H x 17 1/4" W. Frame: 29" H x 22"

Condition
Overall toning, some water damage lower left quadrant and creasing to middle left margin of print. Scrapes and gilt loss to frame.
