(1829-1906) U.S. Commissioner of Education and a Brevet Brigadier General appointed by Ulysses Grant as the Superintendent of Negro Affairs for the Department of Tennessee, where his accomplishments included the establishment of 74 schools. War-date manuscript L.S. ‘John Eaton’ 1p. 4to., Vicksburg, Dec. 21, 1863, on letterhead of the ‘Office General Superintendent of Freedmen’ letterhead to Gen. John B. McPherson. In part: ‘…We have adopted the principle of allowing the blacks to hire out for the coming year to those people within our lines who have your permission to carry on agriculture for the ensuing season…’.
