Jackie's Ambulance Ride to Hospital the Day before John Jr.'s Birth, Recalled by Evelyn Lincoln, JFK's Secretary

1p autograph manuscript inscribed overall by Evelyn Lincoln (1909-1995), John F. Kennedy's personal secretary, relating the details of Jackie Kennedy's ambulance ride to the hospital on November 24, 1960, hours before the birth of John Jr. (1960-1999). The lot is comprised of one sheet handwritten by Lincoln; and two photocopies, including one of the original ambulance bill for $20.00. Expected light wear including staple impressions. Else near fine.

Lincoln had submitted this provenance information to Robert L. White of Catonsville, Maryland, a major JFK collector. Many of the pieces in White's collection had been acquired through Lincoln, who had sold or given away Kennedy documents and personal effects in direct violation of the Kennedy estate's 1965 deed of gift. A court settlement restored the items from White's collection to the National Archives and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in 2014.

1. 1p AM inscribed overall by Evelyn Lincoln on blue-ruled yellow paper, apparently a first draft for an August 5, 1991 letter to buyer Robert L. White. Contains several cross outs. 5" x 7.25".

In part, with unchanged punctuation:

"The original bill from the Hospital Ambulance, Oxygen and Equipment Co., Inc. on 11/26/60, which was ordered by Dr. John W. Walsh, which you now have in your possession, was to take Mrs. John F. Kennedy to the Georgetown Hospital. Soon after her arrival a son, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born. Pres. Kennedy was en route to Florida at that time, but after to leaving the to but upon learning the news at the Palm Beach airport - he immediately turned back".

2. 1p photocopy of a typed version of Lincoln's letter dated August 5, 1991 and on onion skin paper.

3. 1p photocopy of an invoice from Washington, D.C.-based "Hospital Ambulance, Oxygen and Equipment Co., Inc." dated November 24, 1960 and sent to the attention of "Senator John F. Kennedy / President-Elect of the United States". Jackie's physician Dr. John W. Walsh had ordered an ambulance equipped with an oxygen tank and an incubator for a premature infant. The bill totaling $20.00 included the mileage from the Kennedy home at 3307 N Street N.W. to the Georgetown University Hospital. John, Jr. was born the following day, on November 25, 1960.

Evelyn Lincoln served as JFK's personal secretary for over a decade, beginning when the politician was a Senator from Massachusetts, and until his assassination in Dallas in 1963. Lincoln recalled her experiences working for JFK in My Twelve Years with John F. Kennedy (New York: David McKay Company, 1965).
