Description
World War I American M1917 helmet for a member of the 77th Infantry Division, also known as the ‘Statue of Liberty Division’. At the front is the hand-painted insignia for the division, the Statue of Liberty in gold on a blue trapezoid-shaped background. Nearly all of the original paint has worn away. If there are any markings, they are no longer discernible. Lacking the liner and chinstrap. In relic condition. The 77th Infantry Division, mostly comprised of New York draftees, were the first of the American division in France, arriving in 1918. They saw action in the Meuse-Argonne and Oise-Aisne offensives. Interestingly, the famous ‘Lost Battalion’ was comprised of men from this particular division.
