Description
A light-hearted World War I poster, 19 x 18 in., titled ‘Battles Give Way to Sports in A.E.F.’. This poster, published by the Government Printing Office, was issued in an effort to encourage young men to enlist in the U.S. army. At the top half are nine photos depicting all of the tomfoolery, including: soup wagon races; playing a banjo made of pine lumber, a German wagon tongue, tin, and telephone wire; vaudeville shows; A.E.F. members dressing up in German civilian clothes; pole vaulting; mule races; swimming in the canal of the Marne and the Rhine; and of course, the ‘commandeering’ of a German ‘jitney’ or mule-pulled wagon. The bottom reads in part: ‘...How would you like to be with Uncle Sam’s privileged tourists?...See Hawaii, Panama, or the Philippines, and better yourself by attending the Vocational Schools. Earn-Learn-Travel...’ Very light creasing at the bottom edge, else fine.
