Jedes Jahr zur Regenzeit fand in verschiedenen südwestlichen Igbo Dörfern während eines ganzen Monats eine Feier zu Ehren der Wassergeister (owu) statt. In dieser Zeit traten fast täglich zwei gegnerische Tanzgruppen auf: Auf der einen Seite tanzten die weissen, weiblichen Okoroshioma, die für die Reinheit und guten Geister standen.

Ihre aggressiven, männlichen Kontrahenten waren die Okoroshiojo, die das Böse und Dunkle darstellten und verschiedenartigste, oft bis ins Groteske verzerrte Masken trugen.
