Description
Encased Postage Stamps
Ten Cents "Burnett's Cocoaine Kalliston" Rarity-4
EP-105, HB-76, S-47, Reed BK10. Ten Cents, "Burnett's Cocoaine Kalliston", Choice Very Fine or better.
Rated as Rarity-4 (31-40 Known) according to Fred Reed. This is a very collectable example of this highly popular Merchant. The rich green 10 George Washington 1861 Civil War US Postage issue stamp is well centered, with just a bit of soiling on Washington's forehead.
This Encased Postage was issued to advertise a popular hair tonic made from coconut oil, not the currently illegal drug cocaine. The correct pronunciation is "coco-ine" according to Fred Reed on page 151 of his reference book, "Civil War Encased Stamps The Issuers and Their Times". Reed notes, on page 146, that "Kalliston" is an emulsive lotion for improving one's complexion. The mica is unbroken and clear with just some light surface circulation. The case is a natural chestnut-brown with very sharp clear legends displayed on its reverse.
