1790 Federal Period "Regulation of Seaman" Broadsheet
January 4, 1790 Federal Period, Massive Partially-Printed Broadsheet Document for Regulation of Seaman, Signed in the Printed text by GEORGE WASHINGTON, JOHN ADAMS and THOMAS JEFFERSON, Framed, Very Fine.
January 4, 1790-Dated Broadsheet titled: "for the Government and Regulation of Seaman in the Merchants' Service," Signed in the printed text by, George Washington as President, John Adams as Vice President, and Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State, decoratively Framed, Very Fine. This original Document measures 22" x 18.75" and is professionally framed under special UV Plexiglas on Both Sides for Dual Viewing, to fully 23.75" x 26". Its bold header reads: "CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES. - At the Second Session, Begun and held at the City of NEW-YORK, on Monday the 4th of January, 1790." Opened from being sent sealed in the Post, there is some minor corner damage from when opened, having some small fold intersection holes in the left margin selvage away from the printed text. Signed in printed text at the conclusion by; George Washington as President, John Adams as Vice President, and Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. It reads, "Shipping Paper Schooner Commerce Jan.y 1818" later being handwritten in margin.
The opposite side is also Partially-Printed as an Agreement, reading in part: "It is agreed between the Master, Seamen, or Mariners of the Schooner Commerce - Master Oliver Ansbury now in the Port of Boston ...". This form has been fully completed in manuscript, with the signatures of five crewmen, their station, monthly wages, etc., as a further acknowledgment of their wages received. It is interesting to note that the Master's wage of $30 a month is listed alongside the others, including the Cook, at $10 a month. A scarce and important early American Naval laws of commerce and seaman's agreement related period Broadsheet. Ready to view, available on both sides, and display.
Provenance: Collection of Ambassador J. William Middendorf II.
