Pair of Early Photographs from the Late 19th Century
A pair of two silver gelatin prints from the late 19th century. The first, measuring 8" x 6" (mounted to 11.75" x 9.75"), shows a group of well-dressed men standing outside a business called "Alexander Burgess, Carpenter & Builder". In the foreground is a cart horse and a black man, dressed in an all-white work uniform and smoking a pipe. The second image, measuring 10" x 10" (mounted to 11.75" x 10"), captures the Grand Review at Camp Meade, Pennsylvania, during the 1898 Spanish-American War. By photographer J.D. Givens. The owner of the photograph has captioned it at the top, writing "My regiment is near the center." Each photograph has light silvering and toning throughout. Wear, imperfections, and spots of soiling throughout. Some corner wear.
