**First Time At Auction**
European, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A charming gold ring with a slender band and large bezel featuring a carnelian intaglio of a bearded male, perhaps intended as a Greek philosopher, depicted in profile facing right. Framed by the slanted, octagonal periphery of the gem, the bearded bust boasts Classical features of a heavy brow, almond-shaped eyes, a sharp nose, and closed lips engulfed by a full moustache and bushy beard. His neatly combed coiffure is comprised of wavy tresses arranged to form a crown atop his head. Size of exterior of ring: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); of intaglio: 0.5" W x 0.6" H (1.3 cm x 1.5 cm); US ring size: 5.75; gold quality: 64.7% (over 15 karats); total weight: 3.4 grams
