Central Asia, Nepal, Newar, ca. late 19th century CE. A charming cast brass statue of a man being served tea by a woman, both in traditional clothing of the period. The man wears a Dhaka topi cap and is seated on a mat. The woman stands with the teapot in her hand- caught in mid pour. They are both mounted to an integral pedestal base, and their clothes and jewelry suggest they are a high rank. In Newari culture, it is often an important part of feasts and festivals for a woman to serve beverages to a guest. During the feast is known as lapate bhoye, guests sit on straw mats and drink a liquor known as aila (ayla) served in tall pitchers - like the one depicted here. Size: 4.75" L x 3" W x 5.5" H (12.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 14 cm)
