Nepal, ca. 18th century CE. A hand-carved, high relief depiction of a Garuda, a half-man half-bird figure who is the devotee of Vishnu, standing frontally with the beaked head in profile and presenting the Namaskara mudra - a gesture of greeting, reverence, or prayer with palms pressed together and upward, fingers extended and thumbs touching at the tips, to honor or celebrate Vishnu - before his elegantly spread wings. The highly decorated Garuda donning an elaborate headdress, waist wrap, and jewelry is set within an entablature-like architectural element. Size: 3.875" W x 15.625" H (9.8 cm x 39.7 cm)
