Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic Period, Naqada II, ca. 3500 to 3200 BCE. A bifacial flint blade with a fishtail handle, percussion flaked from a brown stone. Percussion flaking was used to shape the upper face by striking with a hammerstone or other tool to carefully serrate the edges. These petite serrations are painstakingly made, and demonstrate the skill and control needed to shape such a seemingly simple form. Size: 4.2" L x 1.125" W (10.7 cm x 2.9 cm)
