Description
The Levant or Egypt, Middle Bronze Age II/Middle Kingdom, Egyptian Dynasties 11 through 13, ca. 2000 to 1800 BCE. A bronze, crescent-shaped axe with a bulbous detail at its center and three places for attachment to a handle. It was cast using the lost wax technique. The Middle Bronze Age was a time throughout the Near East and Egypt that saw increased fortifications and the rise of palace-towns that controlled nearby villages and vied for power. An axe like this may have been used in warfare, but it would have been ultimately deposited as part of a warrior burial. Elite males of all ages were buried, often in caves together with their extended family, and interestingly, with axes like this one at their heads. Size: 12.4" L x 2.25" W (31.5 cm x 5.7 cm)
