A MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR GEN. ZACHARY TAYLOR SIGNED MANUSCRIPT WITH PORTRAIT ENGRAVING, CAMP NEAR MATAMOROS, APRIL 3, 1846, comprising an ink manuscript on cream wove paper with circular blindstamp U/L, dated and placed, response and acknowledgement of communication occuring on March 2nd, 1846 and that which he received en route from Corpus Christi to the Matamoros camp along the Rio Grande encampment, 10" x 8"; and "Portrait of General Zachary Taylor," 1846-1847, Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, engraved by Illman & Sons from an original picture, 22" x 18", framed 29" x 24 1/2". Provenance: Collection of Hubert Hudson, former Texas Senator 1957-1963, Brownsville, Texas. H.P. Kraus Rare Books and Manuscripts, New York, N.Y., 1950s-1980s. Note: Bayou Bend Object No. B.59.59, MFAH Collections. A veteran of the War of 1812, Zachary Taylor came to fams a General in the United States army during the Mexican American War of 1846 to 1848, ultimately serving as President of the United States of America from 1849 until his untimely passing in 1850 while in service as Commander and Chief.
Condition
Yellowing, acid stains, creases, repair with applied supports at crease/seam, and the engraving with handling creases, foxing, pencil inscription, small tears at margins.
