4. ANTOINE VECHTE (1800-1868): A LARGE UNIFACE MEDAL MADE BY THE ELECTROTYPE PROCESS and in exquisite detail, to commemorate Pope Pius IX’s ‘Proclamation of the Immaculate Conception’, 1854, a standing figure of the Virgin Mary, hands crossed and nimbate, angelic figures and cherubs around, vignette portrait of Pius IX at bottom, 156mm., on circular oak mount;

5. ANTOINE VECHTE (1800-1868): AWARD: National Competition of the Students of All Art-Schools, awarded 1858, also by Vechte and made by the same process, small central bust of Queen Victoria left, surrounded by a continual scene of allegorical figures, named, ‘Alfred Copham - Stage IIIb’;

6. PIUS IX, and a small framed wax medallion of Pius IX, 1846, 110mm.

(6)
Vechte came to London after the Revolution of 1848 soon working for Hunt & Roskell, who commissioned a specimen of this medal in gold. On retirement in 1861, he returned to France.
Literature: L. Forrer, Biographical Dictionary of Medallists, London, 1904-1923, vol. VI, pp. 213-214, describes the first medallion as "marvellously beautiful" and states that Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman (1802-1865) noted that an example in gold was made for Hunt and Roskell.
