Item Details
Description
Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, widely considered one of the most important artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was born in Fuendetodos, Spain, and spent much of his career working in Madrid, where he became the court painter to the Spanish royal family. Goya's work is known for its powerful and often disturbing imagery, particularly in his later years when he became increasingly disillusioned with the world around him. He is particularly well-known for his series of 80 etchings known as "Los Caprichos", which depict the follies and vices of Spanish society, and his series of 14 black paintings, which he painted directly onto the walls of his house in his later years. Goya's work had a significant impact on the development of modern art, particularly on the expressionist and surrealistic movements of the 20th century. Today, his paintings and prints are held in the collections of museums around the world and are widely regarded as some of the most important works of art in Western history.
