Description
Black metallic glazed pottery pouring vessel having a long slender applied handle and open type pour spout with applied molded head lugs at the base of the spout. The painted tricolor decoration has a frontal head of a goddess at the center amid bands of leafy sprigs and multiple narrow bands of various geometric decorations. An ornately decorated example. Gnathia was a sub style of the Apulia region in South Italy that produced these black glazed vessels.Size: 9-7/10" H. Provenance: Howard Ted Knapp, a former physicist for the Space Program at NASA, had a deep passion for armor and weaponry and acquired many fascinating pieces from the 60s to the 80s during his extensive world traveling. With an impressive collection that included a three thousand-year-old Ancient Greek sword and over five thousand pieces of pottery, Knapp was an antique dealer and director of Castle Armory Antique Arms Museum in St. Augustine, Florida. He died in 2010 at the age of 95.
