Description
Ninth Plate Daguerreotype of a Free African American Woman of Color, c.1840, presented in its original embossed case, now missing the cover, H.- 2 1/2 in., W.- 2 in., Framed H.- 3 5/8 in., W.- 3 1/8 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Plate has tarnished around interior of frame. Additionally, there is foxing to plate throughout. The booklet in which the piece was framed is missing the top cover at this point. The tooled leather case is now very worn from years of handling. Various areas of loss to leather throughout, particularly along crease where the cover would have connected.
At this time, the only provenance we know is that it comes from a local collector specializing in Louisiana and Creole art and artifacts. Unfortunately, we do not know anything about the actual sitter or the photographer. This is a very handsome example.
