Description
Spanish school; 18th century.
"Infant Jesus".
Carved and polychrome wood.
It presents repainting and restorations.
Measurements: 37,5 x 14,5 x 15 cm.
Round image carved in wood and polychrome, framed within the Spanish school of the 18th century. Jesus appears naked, which indicates that it is an image designed to be dressed in royal clothes. Despite this, the carving is magnificently worked in all its details, which indicates the quality of the piece and the mastery and prestige of its author. One of the most characteristic features of the piece is that the Child does not rest directly on the base as is usual, but in this case one of his feet rests on the serpent, symbol of sin, while the other rests on a skull which symbolises the fleetingness of life, the easy loss of the material in contrast to the celestial eternity proposed by the Christian religion.
Aesthetically, although advanced in time, the piece follows the patterns of Baroque aesthetics, where numerous devotional images were made that presented the Child Jesus standing on a pedestal, with the intention of showing the infancy of Christ with the aim of touching the will of the faithful. Sometimes the attributes varied, giving rise to representations such as, for example, the Child of the ball, or Christ the Redeemer, always based on the representation of childhood.
