Homestead Landscape with Boat on Pond at Sunset, Signed E. M. Bannister and dated '97 lower right, Oil on Canvas, 25 3/4" x 40 1/2", in a period gesso cast frame, Overall measures 32" x 46". Note: Bannister's landscape paintings are melancholic and serene. Influenced by the Barbizon artists in France, he went to Boston and established himself as an artist. Of Barbados descent and being of mixed race, he was not afforded the ease of art education. Eventually, he gained commissions from prominent Bostonians and in 1876 won first prize for Under the Oaks at the Philadelphia Centennial. He is an original board member of the Rhode Island School of Design in 1878. This painting is comparable to many of his landscapes with it's compositional use of reflection of light on a body of water and darker greens and blacks evocative of the the Barbizon color palette. The canvas is original. There is old varnish build-up and some loosening to canvas at stretcher. There is a 4'x 7" patch in the upper left quadrant. The stretcher is not altered and is of the period. Accompanied with a recent fine art conservation report from a local conservator.
