Description
Bannister, Edward Mitchell (1828-1901) - oil painting. Oil on board - signed lower left. A large farmhouse with cows in the pasture can be seen on the shoreline as sailboats enjoy beautiful day. Board measures 8x22 framed to overall size of 14x28. Bannister was the only major African American artist of the late nineteenth century who developed his talents without European exposure; he was well known in the artistic community of Providence and admired within the wider East Coast art world. Bannister created a sensation when one of his paintings won first prize at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. Condition: Fine
