Description
**First Time At Auction**
Kalpana (Indian, XX). Two oil on canvas board paintings, 1960s. One is signed "Kalpana" and dated 1965. A pendant pair of abstract figural paintings, each one depicting a reclining female nude, a traditional subject albeit in a striking avant-garde manner, by Kalpana of Madras, India. One can certainly see the Cubist influence in these figures which are comprised of boldly delineated geometric planes. Furthermore, every surface of their bodies comes to life with expressive painterly applications and splatters of golden yellow, black, and vermilion hues - and the backgrounds are rendered in cool blues and greens with sweeping gestural marks created with the back of a paintbrush - all suggesting the artist's interest in Abstract Expressionism as well. A striking pair of mid-century modern abstract figural paintings by Kalpana, both mounted in custom bold yellow wooden frames. Size (sight view of slightly larger painting): 14.5" L x 24.75" W (36.8 cm x 62.9 cm) Size (frame): 16.5" L x 26.75" W (41.9 cm x 67.9 cm)
Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades. These paintings were purchased directly from the artist in 1965 when Dr. Goldstein was doing research in Madras, India.
