Roman Bronze Head of a Griffin
Roman Bronze Head of a Griffin
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A bronze head with a long snaky neck and avian features. Two incised eyes, a ridged crest, and a thick beak give it a bird-like appearance. Along the neck are incised lines that likely represent feathers. This could be the mythical griffin, a hybrid creature that combines an eagle's head and wings with a lion's body. The lengthy neck would be an ideal handle for a vessel, to which this may have been attached originally. Size: 2.75" L x .5" W (7 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
