Description
Walter Francis Brown (American, 1853-1929) SLR. Oil on Canvas. Dimensions: 14 ¼ x 18 1/4. Professionally cleaned. Unframed. This charming spring Landscape was completed by Brown during his European travel. In 1876, he set sail for Paris to study and pursue his fine arts career. At first, he was somewhat appalled at the bohemian life of Paris and its artists, but he adapted and became very successful professionally with six paintings accepted into the highly selective Paris Salons between 1881 and 1884. As early as 1878 Brown knew he had made the mark when his instructor Gerome significantly cut his class size with a stringent exam. Brown was ranked in the top 5 students and remained in the class after two purges leaving only 15 students at Gerome's, Rue de Saints-Peres studio. He was not only a student of M. Gerome at l’Ecole de Beaux Arts but also studied with Bonnat another popular instructor of American students. Brown befriended another talented Rhode Island artist in Paris at the time, Sidney Burleigh, who took the same 4PM sketching class.
