Signed lower left "J.G. Brown N.A.". Having John Hanna Galleries label and painting description on verso. John Hanna Galleries was a three generation family owned firm that operated in Detroit, MI from 1885-1962. Known for dealing in contemporary art by the leading American and European artists. Provenance: John Hanna Gallery, Detroit, MI. This work was likely completed during Brown's visits to Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, (Bay of Fundy), during the summers of 1877 and 1888. When on Grand Manan, Browns' work focused primarily on the local fisherman. His time in Grand Manan, as well as an image of what could be a companion piece, "Fisherman Bringing Home is Oars", is illustrated and elegantly described in Chapter 5, pg. 113 of "The World of J.G. Condition: In original, unrestored condition. Original canvas, original stretcher, and original frame, Likely retains its original varnish. When viewed under UV and natural light, there is no evidence of restoration. Two small scratches are evident: 1" minor scratch horizontal in the uppermost center cloud (where canvas meets stretcher edge) and 3" minor abrasion on right just above center (only 1/2" appears to have penetrated the varnish). Minor pinhole at frame edge upper left. None of the condition comments mentioned detract from the quality and untouched nature of this work. Frame size: H 35", W 26".
