Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) was an American painter known for her abstract expressionist works. She was born in Chicago and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later in New York City. Mitchell's paintings are characterized by their bold, gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colors. She was influenced by the works of Vincent van Gogh and Wassily Kandinsky, among others. Mitchell's art has been exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally, and she is considered one of the most important female artists of the 20th century.
