Description
GERMAN HANAU SILVER SMALL TUREEN / COMPOTE AND UNDERTRAY, tureen / compote having ovoid-form well with a flared pattern rim, foliate decoration to lower side, and two split handles with double swan head, raised on a pedestal-type foot and topped by ovoid cover with swan figural finial, foot and cover both with a leaf border, undertray being ovoid form with a matching leaf border to rim. Undertray with "J [swan] K" maker's mark for J. Kurz & Co. of Hanau, Germany as well as faint marks of "GERMANY", "800" next to the German reichsmark of a crescent moon and crown, and a "B&Z" retailers mark for Bucholz & Zelt, tureen unmarked and of unknown silver fineness but possibly 0.800 silver fineness. Total weight: 24.47 ozt. Late 19th/early 20th century. Tureen 7" HOA, 6 3/4" x 5 1/2" OA rim; undertray 8 1/8" x 6 1/4" OA.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections including nicks, dents, and worn spots to raised decoration.
