Description
Large English 18th Century Sterling Silver Soup Tureen with engraved coat of arms of Valentine Brown Lawless, Cloncurry (1773-1853). Neoclassical form with oval, fluted base raised on an oval foot, with gadrooned edges and two fluted side handles; the fluted cover with tassel style gadrooned handle. Crest to front with motto VIRTUTE ET NUMINE (Virtue and Diety) and additional crest to lid of knight with sword between crowns. Base hallmarked for John Wakelin & William Taylor, London, 1783, lid also stamped with maker's mark. 11"H x 16"W overall, 100.63 oz troy.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Edith (Edie) M. Bass, Nashville, Tennessee, by descent from her grandfather, C. Frederick Childs (1875-1955), founder of the C.F. Childs & Co. Securities Co. Mr. Childs was the first dealer of U.S. Government Securities. His offices in Chicago and New York were across the street from the Federal Reserve in each city and his trading office was located at One Wall Street.

Condition
Overall very good condition with some light scattered scratches. Possible monogram/crest removal to opposite side of existing coat of arms. Area of wear to gadrooned edge on front of foot area.
