Bill Reid Canada / Haida B: 1920 D: 1998. Entitled - Mother Bear. Signed in the bottom right corner. Embossed gold colour on paper. This piece is part of the Canadian Art Card Series. Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a renowned Canadian artist of Haida heritage. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and grew up in a multicultural environment with both Indigenous and European influences. Reid began his career as a radio announcer and a CBC producer before turning to art in the 1950s.One of Reid's most famous works is The Raven and the First Men, a sculpture he created for the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in 1980. The sculpture depicts the Haida creation story, in which the Raven creates the world and all its creatures. The work has become an iconic symbol of Haida art and is considered a masterpiece of Indigenous sculpture.Reid received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Canada and the National Aboriginal Achievement Award. He was also a respected writer and storyteller and authored several books on Indigenous art and culture. Our next listing is also a piece created by Bill Reid.
