Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a renowned Canadian artist of Haida heritage. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and grew up in a multicultural environment with both Indigenous and European influences. Reid began his career as a radio announcer and a CBC producer before turning to art in the 1950s.Reid is best known for his work in Northwest Coast Indigenous art, including his totem poles, masks, and sculptures, which were deeply rooted in his Haida heritage. He was instrumental in the revival of Haida art and culture, and his work helped to bring Indigenous art and traditions to a wider audience.One of Reid's most famous works is The Raven and the First Men, a sculpture he created for the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in 1980. The sculpture depicts the Haida creation story, in which the Raven creates the world and all its creatures. The work has become an iconic symbol of Haida art and is considered a masterpiece of Indigenous sculpture.Reid received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Canada and the National Aboriginal Achievement Award.
