Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A pair of pottery head fragments from mold-formed human figures. Both are crowned by bulbous headdresses; the larger head is adorned with applied nodules like feathers or beads. Their visages display half-moon-shaped eyes and a hooked nose with a septum ornament. The larger also display additional cheek and chin labrets and the other has green pigment highlighting the jewelry as well as faint cheek markings that may represent tattoos or body paint. Size (larger head): 3.5" L x 2.25" W x 3.75" H (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm x 9.5 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
Both are fragments of larger pieces as shown. Remains of green and red pigments on smaller head and orange pigment on larger head. Minor chips and some softening to details, otherwise great condition.
