Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Remojadas, Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A fragment of a larger figure, this terracotta head displays poignant details characteristic of classic Remojadas sculpture. Large and broad ears, closed eyes, a shapely nose, prominent lips, a wide neck, an agape mouth, and a large headdress give this head a great deal of personality. The expression on this face is more a suggestion of a smile (typical in figures referred to as "sonriente" in Veracruz culture) than a lurid grin, but its captivating emotional expression still persists throughout the centuries. Lucite display not included Size: 5.75" L x 7" W x 6" H (14.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 15.2 cm).
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired over twenty years ago; private Texas, USA collection
