Description
**Originally Listed At $700**
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. This is a sculpted marble fragment that was most likely part of a frieze; the fragment is a high-relief detail of a lower leg and part of a foot. The leg is chubby and might have been a child or a representation of Eros. Marble statuary was everywhere in ancient Rome; even after all of the plundering that Rome underwent after the fall of the Roman Empire, we can still see a tremendous amount of marble statuary, including friezes, throughout the city. As a Roman citizen, you would have seen a world decorated with sculpted pieces like this one; they would have been brightly colored, gilded, or given inlays of shell or other stone. Size: 7" L x 9.25" W x 7.25" H (17.8 cm x 23.5 cm x 18.4 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
