Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Skillfully sculpted from a single piece of marble, the head of a male youth with sensitively rendered features including heavy-lidded eyes with drilled pupils beneath a thin brow line, a naturalistic nose, plump cheeks, and full, gently parted lips. Soft tresses of a thick, wavy coiffure frame his cherubic visage with veristic ears at either side. The classicizing features and treatment of the eyes suggest that the head is from the Julio-Claudian Period, and the verso is fully carved in the round.
