Description

1943 World Series Game 3, Turning Point Play in Yankees V. Cardinals

A group of 7 individual press photographs, sequentially depicting a single play from the 1943 World Series in which the Yankees turn the game around in their favor, eventually winning 6-2. Each picture measures 8" x 10", docketed with their sequential number, and features accompanying play-by-play newspaper captions with press stamp adhered to verso. Exhibits moderate wear, including surface creasing, minor soiling, and markings throughout. Overall, very good.

The sequence, numbered on verso as 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 respectively, shows Johnny Lindell of the Yankees running toward third baseman Whitey Kurowski of the Cardinals. Umpire Beans Reardon first goes to call Lindell as out, but the force of the two players colliding causes Kurowski to drop the ball, thus declaring Lindell as safe. The Yankees now had two on and nobody out, eventually scoring five runs in the inning on their way to a decisive victory. Indeed, they would go on to win games 4 and 5, and subsequently, the Series!

The 40th edition of the World Series was held between October 5-11, 1943 and matched the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals against the New York Yankees, in a rematch of the 1942 Series. The Yankees won the Series in five games for their tenth championship in 21 seasons. Because of World War II, both teams' rosters were depleted. Johnny Beazley, Jimmy Brown, Creepy Crespi, Terry Moore and Enos Slaughter were no longer on the Cardinals' roster. Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto, Red Ruffing and Buddy Hassett were missing from the Yankees, and Red Rolfe had retired to coach at Dartmouth College.
