Jack Kerouac ALS & Signed Cover to Friend Ed White Re: Cabin Renovations

A handwritten letter from Jack Kerouac to his friend, Ed White, concerning plans for a cabin retreat. 1p, measuring 6" x 9", postmarked Northport, New York, dated August 1, 1964. Kerouac responds to a previous letter from White, which included a preliminary drawing for his mountain cabin. He states that it's a decisive “fine”, before going on to offer a few more comments on design and needs. The hideaway house in Florida was mostly built, “so our Irving Kerouac Retreat be next on agenda when all’s well, and all will be well.” However, the Florida house would end up being Kerouac's last stopover. The letter has retained its original cover - hand-addressed and signed "J.K." in the return address. The letter has flattened folds. Bold signatures, overall very fine.

In full:
"Dear Ed,

That sure is a purty cabin, especially those 2 V-shaped balconies seven feet wide, wide enough to sleep on in sleeping bag on cot - Running water & plumbing is a good idea, electricity might not be necessary (Kerosene lamps are peaceful) - Cast iron stove instead of wasteful fireplace could fit in middle with chimbley (cast iron winter night heat) - Fine.

Still trying to sell this house in Northport - House in Fla. Already mostly built & all down payments in - So our Irving Kerouac Retreat be next on agenda when all's well, and all will be well -

Playing softball today with local architects, artists, teachers, psychologists & general cads.

    Jack"

Edward D. White Jr. (1925-2017) was Kerouac's close friend and architect. The two met in 1947 and were friends up until the day Kerouac died in 1969, exchanging over 90 letters and postcards during their acquaintance.
