Description

Roosevelt's Rough Riders Gramophone Disc by Emil Cassi, Chief Trumpeter

A 7" shellac disc for E. Berliner's Gramophone (matrix number 3438) entitled "Bugle Calls by Chief Trumpeter Cassi of Roosevelt's Rough Riders", recorded November 28, 1898. The musician's signature, written as "Chief Trumpeter Emil Cassi", is embossed on the front, along with the gramophone company's logo and patent dates. The recorded tracks include a medley of calls, including First call; Reveille; Assembly; Forward; Guide right; Halt; Skirmish; and ending with Rally. Historically, a bugle's call was meant to indicate daily events at camp as well as relay a commander's orders on the battlefield, making the role of Chief Trumpeter an important one. Exhibits expected surface scratching among other minor imperfections, otherwise very good. A wonderful collector's piece!

The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one to see combat. Commanded under the leadership of major general Leonard Wood and eventual president Theodore Roosevelt, the "Riders" (so named in reference to Buffalo Bill's traveling show) were sent off to Cuba on May 29, 1898, seeing battle in several of the war's major conflicts. Upon their return home on August 14, despite many suffering from exhaustion and other illnesses, the soldiers were widely celebrated and regarded as heroes. The group was disbanded a month later in September, with their first reunion being held in 1899 with then-New York Governor Roosevelt in attendance.
