W.R. Hearst Amazing Sepia Photo with Deckled Edges By Hollywood Photographer James Manatt
A 10.25" x 13" sepia-toned, deckled edge photograph of William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951), signed "To Aileen Pringle with best wishes for her notable success in every endeavor from her friend and admirer / William Randolph Hearst". Photographer's blind-embossed stamp at lower right. Mounting remnants at verso. Light surface wear and minor silvering, else in near fine condition.
Aileen Pringle (1895-1989) was an American stage and film actress during the silent film era. One of her first high-profile roles was as costar to Rudolph Valentino in the film Stolen Moments (1920). For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Aileen Pringle was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
On Sunday, November 15, 1924, Pringle was among a select group of Hollywood elites which included Charlie Chaplin and Marion Davies (who was Hearst's lover) aboard Hearst's yacht in celebration of film producer and director Thomas Ince's 44th birthday. Ince died at the event, and it was said that Hearst shot Ince while aiming for Chaplin, who he believed to be having an affair with Davies. In reality, Ince became severely ill on the yacht, and died of heart failure.
