Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Amarro peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large decorative shield made from the hide of either a hippopotamus or buffalo. The circular shield has a flared exterior rim, a semicircular leather handle knotted onto the concave verso, a prominent raised central ridge, and approximately 30 raised lumps around the raised boss. Horse-riding warriors of the Amarro people would wield lengthy spears while holding these shields for protection against opposing forces. Size: 24.5" Diameter (62.2 cm)
