Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved greenstone traveling icon with two wide faces containing a pair of cavities incised with traditional Ethiopian Orthodox Christian iconography. One side bears a cross and an angel over a knotted orb, and opening the panels reveals several additional figures. The reverse side bears similar images of a cross and an angel, and opening the panels reveals yet another cross, a couple of angelic figures, and a depiction of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The incised details are heavily rubbed with red cinnabar which provides a colorful contrast to the verdant green stone hue. Each of the five panels are held in place with modern thread, though this does not detract from the overall quality of this beautiful example. Size: 3.4" W x 4.5" H (8.6 cm x 11.4 cm).

Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, minor fading to incised details, very minor nicks to some panels, base, and top, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of cinnabar throughout.
