Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Ancient Central Asia, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A handsome bronze ornament in the form of an ibex shown in profile facing left with huge, arching horns and legs folded beneath, hind legs overlapping the fore-legs. The animal presents a pointed ear and slightly open mouth as a pair of bolts protrude from the verso allowing for attachment. The iconography of the ibex is seen over and over again, replicated in gold, bronze, and stone, by various peoples in Central Asia, the Near East, and even the Indus Valley. Perhaps because of their large, protruding horns, the animals seem to have been considered symbolic of virility and masculinity. A wonderful example of ancient Central Asian iconography and artistry! Size: 2.2" W x 1.9" H (5.6 cm x 4.8 cm); 2.3" H (5.8 cm) on included custom stand.
This piece was published in Christie's New York "Antiquities" December 18th, 1998, no. 264.
Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA; ex-Christie's, New York, December 18th, 1998 (Live Auction 9020), 1 of 5 in lot 264
