Description
**First Time At Auction**
Northwestern Europe, Kingdom of Denmark / England, Northumbria, Anglo-Viking, ca. 900 CE. A rare 93% silver penny coin from the Kingdom of Northumbria, during the Viking Age. Obverse: Inverted patriarchal cross, Latin script: CHVT at end of limbs and REX in quarters, with pellets around crossbar. Reverse: cross with pellets in the first and fourth quarter, SIEFREDVS surrounding , and a small cross pattee. The identity of Siefredus and Cnut is uncertain. Siefredus was a Norse King of Northumbria, and numismatic evidence suggests he ruled from around 895 until 900, and some historians believe that Siefredus and Sichfrith Jarl, a fleet commander, were the same person. The name Cnut, also appears, perhaps indicating they were co-rulers for a period of time, and Cnut may have ruled after Siefredus. Size: 0.76" Diameter (1.9 cm); silver quality: 93%; weight: 1.3 grams
In 1840 over 8,000 coins and other items which became known as the Cuerdale Hoard, were found in Cuerdale, Lancashire, England. Northumbrian silver coins bearing the inscription SIEFREDUS REX (King Siefredus) were part of the hoard, indicating the existence of a forgotten king. The name of another previously-unknown king, Cnut, also appears on coins found in the Cuerdale Hoard. The names of both Cnut and Siefredus appear on some coins, perhaps indicating they were co-rulers for a period of time.
