Susanne Nyberg (American, b. 1953). Oil on canvas, ca. 1980s. A captivating painting of majestic cacti rising from the Arizona desert sands with a golden sun orb marking the center of a glorious azure sky which is graced by blush pink clouds, suggesting that the scene is taking place at either sunrise or sunset. Nyberg captured the drama of this landscape with her expressive brushwork and impasto. All is delineated in a dazzling color palette to present a magical moment. According to Nyberg's artist statement, "Susanne Nyberg’s artistic inspiration comes from the Arizona mountains where she lives. Whether she is painting realistic landscapes, or abstract paintings that incorporate minerals and gems mined from the mountains, the natural beauty of her surroundings compels her to create art." Susanne Nyberg was raised in Massachusetts, later moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Arizona. In Boston, she studied at the Art Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and in Washington, D.C. she studied at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. This said, perhaps her greatest influence was artist Bill Freeman, the prominent Western landscape painter whom she met when she moved to Arizona early in her career. Freeman would become her mentor and close friend. Nyberg is best known for her impressively realistic oil and palette knife plein air landscape paintings. She and her husband have lived in the scenic Arizona desert in a small town called Carefree for most of their lives.

Very subtle drip marks at right and left in the sky. Otherwise excellent.
