Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Rookwood Pottery Vase by Lenore Asbury (1866-1933) dated 1901. Signed, numbered, and dated on base. A lustrous glazed ceramic vase of a classic form embellished with a grapevine (black grapes, olive green leaves, and umber vines) motif against an earthy green and golden ochre crackleware ground on the exterior walls with a chocolate brown flared neck and a buttercup yellow interior. The vessel is marked with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), "I" to indicate 1901, identifying shape number "902 C", and a "L.A." (Lenore Asbury) artist's mark on the base. A stunning glazed ceramic vase by Rookwood artist Lenore Asbury with a decorative theme that reflects the zeitgeist for organic motifs during the Arts and Crafts Movement! Size: 6.375" diameter at widest point x 8.875" H (16.2 cm x 22.5 cm)

The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Lenore Asbury attended the Cincinnati Art Academy and worked for Rookwood Pottery from 1894 until 1931. She worked with various glazes including Iris and Vellum.

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Condition
A few minor scuffs and minor imperfections. Otherwise, intact and lovely. The vessel is marked with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), "I" to indicate 1901, identifying shape number "902 C", and a "L.A." (Lenore Asbury) artist's mark on the base. The scored "X" on the bottom may indicate that the piece was a second. This said, according to Lucile Henzke, the "X" does not always indicate a second; sometimes Rookwood marked items that were overstocked with an "X". (Lucile Henzke (1999) Art Pottery of America, p. 199) There is also an old Butterfield & Butterfield label on the base.
